About Valley Of Flowers
Valley of Flowers is the world wide famous Indian National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site situated at an altitude of 3658 mts above sea level in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand,India.The valley of flowers is expended in 88 sq kms measuring around 8 kms long and 2 kms wide. It is well known for its rich variety of flora and fauna. There are many species(around 498) of flowers like Brahmakamal,blue poppy,cobra lilly,Himalayan Monkshood,Himalayan Yellow Poppy etc, some animals may also be found like Himalayan black bear,Musk deer,Himalayan Tahr, Snow Leopard,Red Fox and Variety of butterflies etc.The Valley of Flowers is declared as National Park in 1982 and UNESCO World Heritage in 2005.
Before 1931 the valley was not known by the outside world, Three mountaineers Frank S Smythe,Eric Shipton and R.L. Holdsworth came here after expedition Mt. Kamet. They found the valley full of variety of flowers which attracted them towards the valley and named it "Valley Of Flowers". Frank S Smythe later wrote a book "Valley of Flowers".
The valley is nestled in the upper expanses of Bhyundar Ganga and the lower reaches of Bhyundar Ganga near Govindghat are known as Bhyundar Valley.It is also the second core zone of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.
To reach Valley of Flowers trekkers need to start their trek from Govindghat or Pulna village to Ghangaria which is 13 kms from Govindghat where one can find hotel to stay over night. In the trek route one can see the beauty of this region, Alaknanda river ,green rocky mountains and snow-clad peaks,waterfalls, cold water springs will definitely a thrilling experience.Ghangaria is the base camp of Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers is around 3.5 kms one side, and 6 kms to Hemkund Sahib.
Weather Conditions and Opening Date
The valley of flowers will be opened on 1st of june 2019 till october 2019. The summer season is the best time to visit valley of flowers. From july to August it has 17 degree temperature during the days and the nights are quite cold. July to August is the perfect time to visit because most of the flowers are in full bloom.
Valley of flowers trekking tips
It is 13 kms trek from Govidghat to Ghangaria which is the base camp for Valley of Flowers and Hemkund sahib ,please be prepare before trekking as it is high altitude Himalayan region however it is easy to moderate trek.
Two or more pairs of lightweight trousers or pants, one for trekking and one to wear at night.
One pair of shorts.It will be helpful in rainy season.
Woolen hat as it is very cool in morning and evening
An Umbrella or a Raincoat as it rains a lot in July and August
Large rucksack to carry to gear while trekking
Water bottle,Small towel,Toiletries
Small torch with spare batteries
A good quality trekking shoes
Some Medicines like muscle relaxant or as per your need
Some dry fruits like Fig, Cashew nut and Almonds. Also some chocolates can be bought, idea is to have high energy low weight food items while trekking. You also need to carry packed lunch with you while trekking towards to Valley of Flowers from Ghangaria.
Note:- Please do not throw any wrappers ,plastic bottles or any garbage in the valley, please carry it with you and dump it at Ghangaria.
